Connectivity To Essbase Cube From On-Premises And Cloud In Microsoft Power BI And Oracle Analytics Cloud

Power BI is an Analytics tool and service that offers interactive and paginated reports, dashboards and apps. It connects to over 90 different data sources, including relational, flat files, websites and Big Data. Interface options are similar to Excel for advanced users.

Let us see how to connect to Essbase cubes or applications from Microsoft Power BI and Oracle Data Visualization (DV) in on-premises as well as cloud environments.

Power BI integration with on-premises Essbase:

The only adapter available for on-premises Essbase from Power BI (PBI) is Essbase. We can create dynamic dashboards to “slice and dice” our data and perform many types of analysis. Power BI is more robust than Smartview or OBIEE and allows us to perform better.

The Essbase adapter has a built-in connector that allows us to retrieve data directly from Essbase, at any level of the hierarchy, including aggregated and calculated data.

http://<SERVER NAME>:19000/aps/XMLA

The server name & port number are to be modified as per the environment. By clicking OK, we will be directed to the basic login screen, where the login credentials of the Essbase server are to be provided. After connecting to the application, go to the database and select the required fields.

Power BI integration with Essbase in Cloud:

Connection Steps:

  • Export data as Excel and load Offline as Cube
  • Export data as CSV and load offline as Table
  • Rest API, using Data Direct

As a table:

Power BI Desktop → Get Data → CSV/txt → Browse to file → Import → Rename Table.

As a cube:

Power BI Desktop → Get Data → Excel → Browse to file → Import → Bring each table into data view.

Power BI Desktop → Get Data → Web <Oracle Application Cloud URL> → Login with credentials as you would for OAC.

Connectivity to Essbase Cube from Oracle Data Visualization both on-premises and Cloud:

Oracle Data Visualization provides business users with a graphical representation of data and enables them to discover the hidden patterns within the dataset just by plugging the available data set. TheData Visualization user interface takes a few and simple inputs, then automatically creates rich graphics. Oracle Analytics Desktop is available as a stand-alone or as part of Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC, which is an enterprise data visualization solution).

Connecting OACS (Data Visualization) to Essbase:

In order to connect to Essbase from OACS DV, we need Data Source Name (DSN) which is the connection URL to connect to Essbase as follows
